Levomedetomidine is a sedative-hypnotic agent that belongs to the class of α2-adrenergic agonists. It has a variety of physiological effects, including anesthetic and analgesic properties. Levomedetomidine has been shown to have a high degree of solubility in water, which is greater than dexmedetomidine. Levomedetomidine also causes a decrease in intracellular Ca2+ levels in the brain, which may be due to its ability to activate the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and TLR7 receptors on microglia. These receptors are found on cells that release proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). This drug also has an anti-inflammatory effect due to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators by inhibiting the activity of TNFα and other proinflammatory mediators.
