6,8-Dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-One is a chiral compound with antiviral properties that is used as an inhibitor of the influenza virus. It has been shown to be effective against HIV and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The antiviral activity of this compound is due to its ability to inhibit viral RNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme ribonuclease H. 6,8-Dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-3-One also inhibits other enzymes involved in DNA replication and repair, such as DNA polymerase and topoisomerases I and II, which may make it useful for the treatment of cancer. This compound can be obtained from biomass by functionalization followed by acid catalysis or hydrogenation chemistry in the presence of lignocellulosic material such as wood pulp or paper pulp.
