Product Information
- 2-Isothiocyanato-6-methylheptane
- Heptane, 2-isothiocyanato-6-methyl-
6-Methyl-2-heptyl isothiocyanate (6MHITC) is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the replication of bacterial DNA. It has been shown to be effective in vitro against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). 6MHITC acts by binding to the azide moieties on the bacterial dna and prevents replication. In addition, it is fluorescent and can be used as a marker for bioconjugation chemistry. 6MHITC also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to RNA polymerase and preventing transcription of mRNA. The reaction rate of this compound is slow, which limits its use as an antibiotic for treating infections. It is most effective when combined with other antibiotics such as hydrochloric acid or modifiers such as sodium sulfite.
