Mitochondrial fusion promoter M1 is a small molecule that modulates mitochondrial dynamics and mitophagy. It is an endogenous protein that has been shown to promote mitochondrial fusion and reduce mitochondrial fission. This leads to the enhancement of mitochondrial biogenesis and metabolism, which in turn may help to treat metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, or hypertension. Mitochondrial fusion promoter M1 also has antiviral properties against human-infecting alphaviruses such as Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV), West Nile virus (WNV) and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). This drug prevents the replication of these viruses by inhibiting their ability to enter the host cell. Mitochondrial fusion promoter M1 may be a potential therapeutic agent for neurodegenerative diseases caused by viral replication.
