4-Iodo-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol is a synthetic fluorescent probe that reacts with acetylcholine and other macrocyclic compounds. 4-Iodo-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol has been shown to react with choline, an essential nutrient for the synthesis of acetylcholine, in aqueous solution. The compound also reacts with trimethyl and triiodo derivatives of choline, which are important intermediates in the biosynthesis of acetylcholine. 4-Iodo-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol has been used as a fluorescent probe for biomolecular studies and can be found in a number of natural products such as the marine sponge Halichondria okadai.
