6-Thien-2-ylnicotinonitrile is an anti-malarial agent that belongs to the group of diamidines. It is a precursor to furamidine, which is used for the treatment of malaria. 6-Thien-2-ylnicotinonitrile has been shown to be effective against both p. falciparum and p. rhodesiense strains of malaria, although it cannot be used as a sole agent for treatment due to its high toxicity in humans. This compound binds to the parasite's DNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. The mechanism of action is similar to other diamidines such as cloroquine and quinacrine.
