5,6-Dichloro-2-(methylsulfanyl)-1H-1,3-benzodiazole is a cytotoxic agent that belongs to the group of simplex virus type agents. It is a stereoselective inhibitor of herpes simplex virus type 1 and inhibits glycosylation in the viral envelope. 5,6-Dichloro-2-(methylsulfanyl)-1H-1,3-benzodiazole can be used as an antiviral agent to treat viral infections such as herpes simplex. This drug also has bactericidal activity against gram positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens. 5,6-Dichloro-2-(methylsulfanyl)-1H-1,3-benzodiazole binds to riboside residues on the glycoprotein coat of the virus and inhibits its ability to enter cells by blocking
