2-Chloro-5-methylpyridine 1-oxide is an organic compound with the formula ClCH=N. It is a white solid that is soluble in water and polar organic solvents. The UV spectrum of 2-chloro-5-methylpyridine 1-oxide shows a strong absorption band at 224 nm, which is indicative of the n=1 excited state. The electronic spectrum has been shown to have transitions between the low energy levels E1 and E2 at 5.7 eV and 6.3 eV, respectively, with corresponding intensities of 10% and 15%. The substituents on the ring are electron donating groups, which increase the intensity of the transition from E2 to E1 by 3%.
