2,4(1H,3H)-Quinazolinedione is a light-emitting molecule that binds to odorant-binding proteins in the nasal passage. This binding alters the transport properties of these proteins and increases the sensitivity of 5-HT2 receptors in response to serotonin. 2,4(1H,3H)-Quinazolinedione has been shown to inhibit binding of serotonin to its receptor in animal models. This inhibition prevents activation of the 5-HT2 receptor and lowers blood pressure as a result. The low bioavailability of 2,4(1H,3H)-Quinazolinedione makes it an ideal candidate for further research on novel drug delivery systems such as nasal sprays or aerosols.
