7-Oxo-nonanoic acid is a carboxylic acid with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)6COOH. It has an aliphatic structure and can exist as three isomers, namely 7-oxononanoic acid, 7-oxononanic acid, and 7-oxodecanoic acid. The potassium salt of this compound is an aerosol used in dermatology to treat acne. It has been shown to reduce the amount of fatty acids present on the surface of skin cells by reacting with fatty acids at the surface of the skin. This reaction product is called trichloroacetic acid (TCA). TCA breaks down into water and chloroform when sprayed onto skin or hair.
