It can be prepared by a Wittig reaction with ethyl acetoacetate and 4-methylbenzaldehyde. 1MPP has been used as a reagent in the synthesis of selenides and as a catalyst for phosphine activation. The catalytic activity was found to be stereoselective, where the enantiomer of 1MPP acts as a chiral catalyst. It also acts as a nucleophile and autocatalyst, which means it can react with itself in an autocatalytic way.
