5-Bromo-2-methyl-4-phenyl-1,3-oxazole is a marine natural product that has been identified as a novel inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD). This compound is an analogue of delpazolid and it has been shown to be effective against Gram positive bacteria. It also has the potential to be used as a drug for the treatment of tuberculosis. The 5-bromo substituent on the 2 position may act as a hydrogen bond acceptor and this may contribute to its stabilization in water. The indian chemists who first isolated this compound from marine sponges have reported that it is biosynthesized by marine organisms.
