2-Methylnaphth[2,1-d]oxazole is a stepwise photolysis of acetonitrile that yields carbene. The carbene then rearranges to form the desired product. Carbene is a reactive species that can be generated in photolytic reactions and will react with methanol to form the desired product. This compound is photoactive, so it can be used as a photoresist. The yield of this reaction is high because it does not require any harsh chemicals or solvents, such as dichloromethane. This reaction also takes place at room temperature and only requires infrared light for activation.
