The R configuration is the more potent inducer of histidine decarboxylase, which is responsible for the biosynthesis of histamine from histidine. 1-tert-Butyl-1H-imidazole can also be used as a linker in palladium complexes and as an antifungal drug that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal membranes.
