7-Chlorophthalide is a metallation reagent, which can be synthesized by reacting 3-chlorobenzoic acid with lithium chloride in dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. 7-Chlorophthalide is used for the synthesis of biaryl compounds, such as substituted phenols, which are used in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. This product has been shown to react with alkenes, whereby the chloro substituent on the benzoic acid is replaced by a methylene group. The sequence of reactions that are carried out to synthesize this compound is lithiation, followed by dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate substitution. The lithiation step may be carried out using n-butyllithium (n-BuLi) or butyllithium (BuLi).
