2-(2-Pyridinylamino)-8-quinolinol is a potent inhibitor of several cellular kinases. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of epidermoid carcinoma cells, and also has anti-tumor effects in vivo. 2-(2-Pyridinylamino)-8-quinolinol can also inhibit the growth of viruses such as human papillomavirus that are involved in the development of cancer. This drug is used to treat proliferative disorders, such as biliary tract cancers and pancreatic adenomas, by inhibiting phosphine production. 2-(2-Pyridinylamino)-8-quinolinol also inhibits the growth of bladder cancer cells and ovarian cancer cells, which are sensitive to kinase inhibitors. In addition, this drug has been shown to have neurotoxic effects on the central nervous system by binding to voltage gated sodium channels and increasing their activity.
