Product Information
- Pertussis toxin from Bordetella pertussis
- Pertussis Toxin, Bordetella pertussis
Pertussis toxin is a protein that is secreted by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis and causes the disease pertussis. The toxin belongs to the class of ADP-ribosyltransferases, which catalyze the transfer of an ADP-ribose moiety from NAD+ to a protein acceptor. Pertussis toxin acts on human polymorphonuclear leukocytes, causing them to release inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species. This results in respiratory distress, coughing, vomiting, and other symptoms of pertussis. Pertussis toxin also has been shown to target toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on human cells and trigger cytokine production. This may be due to its ability to inhibit guanine nucleotide binding proteins (G proteins).
