O-(Decylphosphoryl)choline is a phosphorylated analog of choline. It is an important monomer in the synthesis of phospholipids and glycolipids, which are major components of cellular membranes. O-(Decylphosphoryl)choline can be used for the structural studies of mutant enzymes that have hydrogen bonding interactions with this molecule. These mutant enzymes are not active when they bind to unlabeled o-(decylphosphoryl)choline molecules. The efficiency of the binding process between o-(decylphosphoryl)choline and these mutant enzymes is determined by the residue in their active site. The hydrodynamic properties of o- (decylphosphoryl)choline, such as its dipole moment, can also be measured using nmr spectroscopy techniques. This molecule has been shown to form micelles with benzocaine, which may help to explain its anesthetic effects.
