Ethyl 7-methyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylate is a lead compound that exhibits affinity for the N-terminal region of the anthranilic acid binding site of styphnates. The indole ring can be substituted at the C4 position with fluorine to produce a potent antagonist for anthranilic acid.
