The compound 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (CPP) is a supramolecular complex that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is used as a precursor for conjugates with metal ions such as palladium and platinum, which are used in the treatment of cancer. CPP has been shown to bind to the surface of cancer cells and inhibit their growth. This transfer mechanism is based on hydrogen bonding between the phenyl groups in CPP and the monolayer of phospholipids on the cell membrane. The hydrogen bonds form a hydrophobic layer around the cell membrane, which prevents water from entering and causes dehydration of the cell.
