(R)-(+)-1,1,2-Triphenyl-1,2-ethanediol 2-acetate is a chiral molecule that is used in the synthesis of other molecules. It can be used to synthesize azides or isopentane. This molecule has two stereoisomers, which are enantiopure and diastereomers. The (S)-(−) form is the more stable form at room temperature and under vacuum than the (R)-(+) form. The molecule has a diazide skeleton with a nucleophilic carbon atom that can react with an electrophilic place such as an alkyl halide to form an aldehyde. This byproduct can then react with diisopropylamine to produce the desired product. Cancer cells are sensitive to this molecule because it inhibits their metabolism by inhibiting ATP production through inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholine esterase.
