It has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of algae in water containing titanium sulfide and titanium oxide nanoparticles. Methyl 4-chloro-3-hydroxy-5-methoxythiophene-2-carboxylate can also be used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of organic compounds in wastewater by irradiation.
