Trinexapac-ethyl is a herbicide that has protein synthesis inhibiting properties. It belongs to the group of phenoxypropionate herbicides and inhibits the activity of the enzyme acetyl-CoA carboxylase, which is involved in fatty acid biosynthesis. Trinexapac-ethyl has been shown to enhance the growth of perennial ryegrass and other plants by increasing the production of chlorophyll and reducing leaf senescence. The inhibition of protein synthesis by trinexapac-ethyl may be due to its ability to acylate an aspartic acid residue on acetyl-CoA carboxylase, thereby blocking this enzyme's activity.
