Description:

Δ9-Canrenone is a reagent that is used in the preparation of eplerenone, a steroidal anti-hypertensive drug. It is synthesized from canrenoic acid by lactonization and conversion to its methyl ester. The methyl ester is then converted to the corresponding epoxide. The epoxide reacts with boron trifluoride etherate to produce an intermediate which undergoes a cyclization reaction with furyl chloride and methanol to yield Δ9-canrenone. This compound has been found in environmental samples as a result of industrial pollution and as an end product of the metabolism of steroids by bacteria.
