Magnesium citrate is a salt of citric acid and magnesium that is used in wastewater treatment. It is also used to treat bowel diseases such as constipation, diarrhea, and intestinal gas. Magnesium citrate binds to sodium ions in the intestine, preventing them from being reabsorbed into the body. This leads to increased water retention and more solid stools, which can relieve constipation. Magnesium citrate has been shown to reduce blood pressure in people with hypertension and may be used in combination with other pharmacological agents for this purpose. The drug has been found to have few side effects when taken at low doses over a long period of time.
