6-Piperidinonicotinic acid (6PN) is a ligand that binds to the active site of carbonic anhydrase II. It is used in pharmacology as a hydrogen bond donor to stabilize various drugs and has been studied for its effects on cancer. 6PN has been shown to inhibit the growth of cultured tumor cells by causing cell death through the inhibition of protein synthesis. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the enzyme carbonic anhydrase II and preventing it from catalyzing reactions involving CO2 hydration, which can result in hypercapnia. 6PN may be used as an acid analog in dyslipidemia therapy because it inhibits hepatic lipase activity, which leads to reduced plasma triglyceride levels.
