Friedel-Crafts catalysts are used in organic synthesis to promote the conversion of alkenes into aldehydes and related compounds. A wide variety of Friedel-Crafts catalysts have been developed, including many that are commercially available. The most commonly used catalysts are Lewis acids, such as AlCl3, FeCl3, TiCl4, ZnCl2, BF3O(OEt), or C6H5COONa. Friedel-Crafts reactions can be carried out in either aqueous or nonaqueous solvents. The yield is typically greater for reactions conducted in nonaqueous solvents because the reactants are less likely to undergo side reactions with water molecules.
