6-Feruloylcatalpol is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and thereby prevent the tissue destruction that is associated with chronic inflammation. 6-Feruloylcatalpol has been found to have an inhibitory effect on the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. It also inhibits the production of fatty acids in liver cells. 6-Feruloylcatalpol may also be useful for treating insulin resistance by reducing the level of fatty acids in liver cells. The mechanism behind this effect is not yet fully understood but may involve inhibition of fatty acid synthase.
