Metanicotine-d3 is a derivative of nicotine. It is synthesized by the reaction of pyrrolidine with ethyl chloroformate and hydrochloric acid in acidic conditions, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting ester. The elimination of water from metanicotine-d3 can be effected using hydrochloric acid. The product is racemic with a deuterium atom at the 3 position. This compound has been used as an internal standard for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis for its acidic hydrolysis products.
