A 839977 is a potent and selective small-molecule inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9. It has been shown to inhibit MMP-9 activity in human monocytes, macrophages, and T cells. This inhibition may be due to the prevention of MMP-9 from entering the cell by blocking its cation channel. A 839977 has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and pain relief in animal models of inflammatory diseases. A 839977 may be clinically relevant for a number of degenerative diseases, including cancer, because it inhibits the uptake of the amyloid beta protein that is associated with Alzheimer's disease.
