Product Information
(-)-Variabilin is a natural compound that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is derived from the fatty acid, tetronic acid, and inhibits phosphatase activity. (-)-Variabilin binds to the catalytic site of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) and blocks its ability to dephosphorylate PTP-activated proteins, including insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1). The structure of this active form is similar to deguelin, a synthetic compound that also inhibits PTP1B. The sequences of (-)-variabilin have been determined and it is possible that this molecule may be an analog of natural compounds found in plants such as mcf-7.
