3-Benzyloxypyrrolidine is a sphingomyelinase inhibitor that binds to the catalytic site of sphingomyelinase, thereby preventing its enzymatic activity and leading to significant reductions in sphingomyelin. 3-Benzyloxypyrrolidine has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of phospholipids such as sphingomyelin and phosphatidylcholine (PC) in the presence of excess free fatty acids. It also reduces plasma levels of PC, which are associated with cardiovascular diseases. The membrane permeability and lipophilicity of 3-benzyloxypyrrolidine have been shown to be high, which makes it suitable for use as a drug target for cardiovascular diseases.
