4-chloro-5-nitro-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1h-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine is a lead compound for the treatment of bowel diseases. It inhibits the growth of tumor cells by binding to pyrrole and chlorinating it. This leads to an inhibition of DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, which are required for tumor cell growth. 4-chloro-5-nitro-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1h-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine has also been shown to be effective in treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It acts as a medicinal agent that is administered orally.
