4,7,10,13,16-Pentaoxanonadec-18-ynoic acid is a red fluorescent compound that has antibacterial activity. It forms a maleate salt and is conjugated to vitamin B12. 4,7,10,13,16-Pentaoxanonadec-18-ynoic acid is soluble in water and the pH of its solution can be adjusted using buffer solutions. The compound is also encapsulated in liposomes or nanoparticles with propargylamine linkers that can be clicked to other molecules such as proteins or nucleic acids. 4,7,10,13,16-Pentaoxanonadec-18-ynoic acid has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacterial cells such as E. coli and S. typhimurium by disrupting their cell membranes and inhibiting protein synthesis.
