O-(4-Methoxybenzyl)hydroxylamine is a hydroxamic acid derivative that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to phosphate derivatives in the bacterial cell membrane and inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and protein. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis. O-(4-Methoxybenzyl)hydroxylamine also inhibits deformylase, an enzyme necessary for peptidoglycan synthesis, which may be involved in bacterial cell division. This drug also binds to glycan and hydroxamic acids in mammalian cells.
