Calcium mesoxalate trihydrate is a crystalline compound that is used as an oxygen scavenger and catalyst. The calcium ion in the compound reacts with the hydroxyl radical, which is one of the most reactive and damaging forms of oxygen, to form hydrogen peroxide, which can then be converted into water. The calcium ion also adsorbs other reactive oxygen species such as singlet oxygen and superoxide anion. Calcium mesoxalate trihydrate is used as an additive in products such as glycerol and dihydroxyacetone to prevent oxidation reactions. It is also used in some toothpastes to prevent cavities by inhibiting bacterial growth on teeth.
