Ethyl 5-chloro-3-phenyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylate is a protonated molecule, which has been shown to be effective against tuberculosis. It also inhibits the replication of viruses in cells, with a selectivity index of 11. Ethyl 5-chloro-3-phenyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylate has an antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium and methylated Mycobacterium, with an IC50 value of 1.0 μM and 10.0 μM respectively. The compound also has antiviral properties that have been demonstrated by its ability to inhibit HIV replication in vitro. Ethyl 5-chloro-3-phenyl-1H indole 2 carboxylate is able to inhibit the growth of mycobacteria by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, leading to arrest of DNA synthesis and cell death. This
