In this process, 3-bromo-4-hydroxyfuranone reacts with water and oxygen to form 3,4-dibromohexene. This reaction is catalyzed by copper oxidizing agent. The cyclization of 3,4 dibromohexene yields 5-(3′,4′dibromobutylidene)-2,5′dihydrofuran.
