3-Hydroxyhexanoic acid methyl ester is a fatty acid that belongs to the class of fatty acids. It is the major component of hexadecanoic acid and reacts with oxygen in the presence of heat to form volatile compounds, including terpenes, aldehydes and ketones. 3-Hydroxyhexanoic acid methyl ester has been shown to have optical properties that are dependent on its molecular weight. The lower molecular weight components are more soluble in water while higher molecular weight components are more soluble in organic solvents. 3-Hydroxyhexanoic acid methyl ester can be used as a sustainable raw material for production of acrylic polymers, which are used in coatings, adhesives, elastomers and plastics.
