4-Butylamino-chromen-2-one (4BA) is an antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosomal RNA of the bacterium. It has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, including Klebsiella and Staphylococcus aureus. 4BA has bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity; this drug is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Bacteria are killed by 4BA in two ways: either they are killed by the accumulation of toxic intracellular metabolites or they are induced to autolyse (self digest). The spectrum of activity for 4BA includes organisms that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as streptomycin. This antibiotic binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
