Heptadecyltrimethylammonium bromide is a cationic surfactant. It is used in the manufacture of fire-resistant fabrics and in the separation of crude oil into its components. Heptadecyltrimethylammonium bromide has a high surface tension, which allows it to form a monolayer on the surface of water. Heptadecyltrimethylammonium bromide can also be used as a catalyst for magnesium oxide, which is used in the production of magnesium metal.
