2,5-Dichloro-4-methylbenzoic acid is a reversible inhibitor of the mitochondrial dehydrogenase enzyme. It inhibits acetaldehyde production from ethanol by reversibly binding to the enzyme. 2,5-Dichloro-4-methylbenzoic acid has been shown to cause induced inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenases in rat liver mitochondria and inhibit aldehyde dehydrogenase activity in vitro. This compound causes reversible inhibition at high concentrations, but irreversible inhibition at low concentrations.
