Methiuron is a herbicide that inhibits the growth of plants by inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids. It binds to the enzyme 3-phosphoshikimate-3-phosphotransferase, which is required for biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids. Methiuron also inhibits the activity of a number of enzymes, including 5'-nucleotidase and phosphoglucoisomerase, which are involved in the synthesis of nucleic acids and nucleotides. This drug has been shown to be effective against autoimmune diseases in mice and may have antiinflammatory properties. Methiuron is used as an agrochemical to control weeds in crops such as rice, sugar beet, soybean, wheat, cottonseed, corn, and peanuts.
