5-Bromo-2-methylpentan-2-ol is a synthetic analogue of vitamin D3. It has been shown to bind to the a-ring of the vitamin D receptor, which makes it an effective analog. 5-Bromo-2-methylpentan-2-ol has been used in clinical trials as a treatment for osteoporosis. The compound is biologically active with respect to its ability to increase osteocalcin levels and inhibit parathyroid hormone release from the pituitary gland. 5BMPD3 also binds to the vitamin D receptor, preventing the conversion of 25(OH)D3 into 1,25(OH)2D3 and the subsequent activation of intracellular calcium channels. This leads to increases in osteocalcin, inhibition of bone resorption, and improved mineralization.
