3-Chloro-6-methylbenzoyl chloride is an herbicidal agent that inhibits the growth of plants by binding to plant cell membranes and interfering with their function. It is used in agriculture as a post-emergence herbicide. 3-Chloro-6-methylbenzoyl chloride is also used to produce herbicides such as aminotriazole, cyclohexanedione, and dinitroaniline. The reaction product of potassium hydroxide, amido, ethyl alcohol, benzoic acid, and anhydrous tetrahydrofuran yields 3-chloro-6-methylbenzoyl chloride. This reaction takes place in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran in the presence of potassium and cyclization takes place when chloride ion reacts with benzene ring at one position. Methanesulfonyl chloride is then added to the reaction mixture as a chlorinating agent to produce the final
