(S)-Ethyl 2-acetamido-3-(4-hydroxy-3,5-diiodophenyl)propanoate is a hormone that is used in the synthesis of thyroxine. It is a precursor to the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. (S)-Ethyl 2-acetamido-3-(4-hydroxy-3,5-diiodophenyl)propanoate is synthesized in an organic solvent (methanol) by reacting a 4-hydroxy 3,5 diiodo phenyl acetic acid with ethyl acetimidate. This reaction produces yields of up to 77%. The product can be purified by filtration and evaporation.
