12-Hydroperoxy-5(Z),8(Z),10(E),14(Z)-eicosatetraenoic acid (12-HPETE) is a fatty acid that is produced from arachidonic acid by the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. 12-HPETE has been shown to be involved in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and neurodegenerative disorders. 12-HPETE has been shown to cause oxidative injury to neuronal cells, which may lead to neural death. It also inhibits the activity of enzymes such as hydroxylases and polymerases, which are important for normal cellular function. The concentration of 12-HPETE in biological samples can be determined using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry or HPLC with fluorescence detection. The optimal pH for this enzyme is 6.0 - 7.0, and it has a molecular weight of 252 Da and an oxygen permeability coefficient of 2
