5-Nitro-m-xylene-±,±²-diol is a polymeric compound that is synthesized by the reaction of nitrous acid with m-xylene. This thermolabile compound has been used as an initiator for polymerization and is also used to initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. 5-Nitro-m-xylene-±,±²-diol can be used as a termination agent in polycarbonate synthesis. This compound functions by terminating the chain growth of molecules by reacting with one or more double bonds in their backbone.
