4-Pentyl-trans-cyclohexanemethanol is a liquid crystalline compound that is structurally analogous to the cationic, mesogenic compounds 4-pentyl-trans-cyclohexene methanol and 4-[(4'-pentylphenoxy)methyl]benzene. 4-Pentyl-trans-cyclohexanemethanol has been shown to be an isoelectronic anion with benzene, which means it can stabilize benzene in its ground state. This liquid crystalline molecule has also been shown to stabilize pyridine in the solid state. The optical rotation of this compound changes as it becomes more polar. It has a negative optical rotation (−1.5°) for the nonpolar form and a positive optical rotation (+3.7°) for the polar form.
