Benzoic acid,2,3,4,6-tetraiodo- is a chemical that is used in the production of x-ray contrast media. It reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to form diazonium salt and then reacts with an alkylating agent such as arachis oil to form a 3-amino-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid. The chloride ion is then removed by esterification to form a 3-amino-2,4,6-triiodobenzoate ester. Finally the metallic ion is removed by reacting with hydrogen chloride gas to produce 3-amino-2,4,6-triiodobenzoic acid.
